Man jailed after failing to appear in child support case

It may be easy for those looking from the outside in at child support cases in Germantown to simply dismiss such assistance as a way for divorced parents to get back at their former spouses. What may be forgotten in this assumption is that the amount of child support one is required to pay is determined by the court, and as such, officials treat the nonpayment of it very seriously. Missed child support payments could result in children going hungry or their custodial parents not being able to afford needed services such as medical treatments or daycare. Thus, when the court is forced to intervene in order to enforce such an agreement, the obligor could end up facing some serious penalties.

This fact is on full display in the case of a Florida man who was recently jailed in Texas for a failure to meet his child support arrears. His case first came to the attention of officials after he failed to appear at a hearing earlier this month. He claims his lawyer had told him that his presence was not required as it was just an evidentiary hearing. Yet his absence made him a fugitive, and his arrest soon followed. Ultimately, he was ordered to pay over $130,000 in back payments and other expenses related to his case. He agreed to this amount, yet was still ordered to be taken into custody by the judge. A new hearing in the case is reported to be forthcoming.

While the penalties handed down in this particular case may seem harsh, such consequences are often what is needed in order to ensure compliance to a child support agreement. Those looking to have such agreements enforced may want to work with an attorney in doing so.

Mr. Thomas kept me well informed during my lengthy divorce. He always returned my calls within 24 hours, usually sooner. He gave me very good advice and listened to all of my concerns. He always told me what I needed to hear, not necessarily what I wanted to hear. I found him to be a nice, honest and hard-working lawyer.

Justin and his staff are a great team! Justin represented me after the divorce was finalized and fixed what the original attorney told me was set in stone! Everything we asked for we received, from both the court and the staff. It has been almost two years and I can still contact them for anything I need and they are ALWAYS more than willing to help! I recommend Justin and his staff as much as possible. There is no way I would ever use anyone else!

Justin Thomas represented me in a divorce and I was very pleased with his work ethic and representation. He was extremely professional and cared about what was in the best interest of my son and me. He kept the cost of the divorce to a minimum, which was great! I believe he provided excellent representation and honestly cared about me, the outcome of my divorce, and most importantly, my time with my son. I have recommended Mr. Thomas to several friends and will continue to do so.
